After Hours (Rough Cut 2)

Title Sequence Analysis

Title Sequence Analysis for the Woman in Black

The film slowly begins with 3 small girls pretending to have a tea party. Using props such as dolls and cups, they all seem to be having fun and enjoying themselves with beaming smiles on their faces. Until they all notice something in the corner of the room. The viewer cannot actually see what it is however the 3 girls then shift their view toward the window on the corner of the bedroom. The camera shot puts a lot of emphasis on the window. The girl’s faces look scared and uncertain. The three girls all stand up in unison dropping and breaking their toys as they walk towards the window, with blank expressions on their faces. All 3 girls open the windows at the same time and leap out. You can hear vague screams of what you can assume is the mother of the children. The camera slowly pans out from the window and you can see an outline of a women dressed in black. The shot slowly fades to white. During the sequence all natural lighting is used making the shot quite bright in a complete contrast too how dark and shocking the scene truly is. The sound used in the scene is quite ambient and eerie which matches with the shots of the dolls heads been crushed along with all the crockery. In the last few seconds a silhouetted figure can be seen standing on the right hand side of the screen. it remains a silhouette as the creators wanted to keep some mystery about the woman in black for later in the film, however it is still enough to shock the audience as an appearance that early in the film is unexpected. In the background slow tension building music, this creates a tense atmosphere and lets the viewer know that something big is about to happen. As the three girls walk towards the window, close up shots are used of the props are used as they are crushed under the feet of the young girls. The costumes that the girls are wearing are quite dated. This gives the impression that the film was set some time ago, presumably in the 1940's or the 1950's. The same could be said for the location, it appears to be set in an old victorian house. the interior decor appears hold fashioned as well. this therefore sets the tone for the rest of the film.

Inspirational Opening Sequences

Opening sequence of films

Step Brothers - After the original credits where it lists the main creators of the film and the directors, it begins on a close of the main characters hand (Will Ferrell) spreading cheese on top of his nachos and then putting them in the microwave, this gives a sort of humorous tone as this is not a typical breakfast that a normal person would implying that these are not normal characters. In then goes into a shot of Will Ferrell’s face looking out from the microwave and his acting credit comes up in the bottom left. It also introduces the next character, which is John C.Reiley, who in the scene is getting dressed. This shows both of the main characters morning routines to show what’s normal in their every day life as later on it changes drastically. After this it begins to show how both their respecting parents had met and them getting married so soon afterwards whilst the credits are still rolling to show just how sudden this change in their lives was and finally gives their reaction towards this sudden marriage and neither character are happy about it, this is where the story takes off once the credits stop rolling, as they are moving in and the two step brothers meet for the first time. As these scenes roll there is some upbeat music paying in the background.

Green Street hooligans – The very first scene is the London underground at night, its very dark and is empty, as you would expect at this time. As it begin to zoom in on the stairwell, the green street hooligans come up the stairs making a lot of noise and kicking a bottle as if they were footballers. They look a cross and see a rival hooligan gang stood in a line. They compose themselves and begin to abuse one another. After some time a train passes and they begin to start fighting it cuts to them on the street as appose to being underground and the green street hooligans are winning and as one hooligan hits another it transitions into a calm and peaceful place and this is where you meet the main character, and the story then progresses from here and all the acting credits will come after this sequence.

History of genre (Horror)

History of Horror

Horror is a genre of literature, which is intended to or has the ability to scare or startle those who watch or read these horror stories by creating an eerie atmosphere and creates a sense of horror or terror. Horror can be either supernatural or non-supernatural. Horror tends to play on the fears of their society. The genre it self has ancient origins that were reformulated in the gothic 18th century. Horror has its roots in religious traditions, focusing on death, afterlife, evil and the demonic, also things embodied in the person, these were shown through stories of witches, vampires, werewolves and ghosts. Eighteenth century gothic horror used these fears to create the very first gothic horror novel, which was the castle of Otranto (1764), which was created by Horace Walpole. This was the first novel to incorporate elements of the supernatural however it was first published as a medieval romance, which sparked a lot of controversy by people saying it was anachronistic or just in poor taste, but hate it or love it people couldn’t ignore it as it proved to be immediately popular and provoked the work of many other gothic horror novels around this time. A considerable amount of horror fiction was written by females in this era and was marketed towards females. A typical scenario would be a female protagonist facing an eerie and gloomy castle.

Although gothic horror began to blossom a lot more as it entered the 19th century and turned into a more modern version of horror and was referred to as horror literature from this point on. Inspired by influential works such as Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein (1818) or Edgar Allen Poe’s short stories. Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1886), Oscar Wilde's the Picture of Dorian Gray (1890). Each of these novels was an enduring icon of seen in modern re-imaginings on the stage and screen.

Early 20th century cinema was inspired by many aspects of horror literature, and early horror cinema started a strong tradition of horror films and subgenre based on horror fiction continues to this day. Up until the graphic depictions of violence and gore on the screen commonly associated with the 1960s and 1970's Slasher films and splatter films. Many modern novels claim an early description of the living dead in a precursor to the modern zombie tale. E.g. Richard Matheson's 1954 novel I Am Legend would also influence an entire genre of apocalyptic zombie fiction emblematic of the films of George A. Romero. One of the defining traits of the genre of horror is that it provokes a response; emotional, psychological or physical, within readers that causes them to react with fear. One of H.P. Lovecraft's most famous quotes about the genre is that: "The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown.

Although Horror is not to be confused with the genre thriller, as this focuses on building suspense and tension as appose to focusing on fear and terror like the genre horror is supposed to provide.
